Our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers belly danced in rooms with all women, passing this secret—this legacy—down to us, knowing we could tap into it in our time of need. This event is hijabi-friendly, so no photos or videos; just community, connection, live drums, henna, treats, elixirs, a bazaar, and the type of joy and empowerment so many of us crave right now.

I was very nervous leading up to the event and almost changed my mind a couple of times. I had all sorts of worries based on classes/events I'd been to in the past (none of these events!) and worried it might be the same. I'm so so glad that I didn't listen to my worries. The class and the party afterwards are exactly what so many events promise to be, but tend to fall short: welcoming, healing, and genuinely judgement-free. I didn't want to leave at the end of the night and, when I finally did, I drove home happier and lighter than I'd been in years.

I am Palestinian Domari and Sinti. Before this event, I was carrying so much rage and pain and have felt such a lack of community. It is hard to explain how powerful dancing in a room full of diverse women free from judgment, cameras, and men is. Dance is so important to me culturally and spiritually and it is so crucial to find the light and freedom where we can. It was a night of authentic connection because we were just a community dancing and celebrating one another. There were no distractions, no competition, no complexities. I have been feeling more connected with myself. This event inspired me to dance more and continue to build communities. I will be back and will be inviting everyone I can to join!

This was my first secret belly dance party and I am absolutely in love. I felt held and seen. I was able to connect with my body, liberate some emotions I had been holding in my hips and unable to free. Someone saw me, understood what I was doing and formed a heart shape with her hands. It was touching. Many there also thanked me for bringing my little one and that was deeply moving. There are times were it feels like bringing in a child destroys the vibe yet here she was welcomed and appreciated. We were both accepted just as we are. thank you!
